Childhood Event
One of the most significant events of my childhood was my whole 6th grade school year. My whole 6th grade school year was a important event of my childhood because it is where I found a lot of myself. In my elementary school 6th grade was still part of the elementary school, but that would be changed a year after our class left because 6th grade would be part of the middle school. So this would be a significant part of my school career in gneral, going from elementary school to middle school. But my 6th grade career was very sginificant because like I said before it's where I found myself. By finding myself I meant this is where I figured out at an early age who I am and what I liked to do and what type of person I was meant to be. At the time I did not know any of this. Who would have known in 6th grade it would hugely impact the way I am, think, act and do things today. In 6th grade I figured out that writing was one of my passions. I loved to write and I was good at it, I figuured that out at a early age. I used my passion to my advantage. This worked to my advantage later on down the road. Taking tests such as the PSSA's or writing tests in classes, even writing in the SAT's, as well as writing tests to see where to placed in college. My 6th grade teacher also pushed me, he helped me seek my passion. He pushed me to realize my potential. He showed me that I could be a leader! This reflected a lot in who I am today and the decisions I make. This has carried on to me being a strong willed person. 6th grade I grew a lot I was prepared and ready for middle school which prepared me for High School which prepared me to pay attention to what I need to learn and take on as far as academics and life for college. During the moment I did not know this at all, but looking back on it it's had a huge impact.
Shattered Glass
1. What type of proccesses are involved in writing?
2. How did the characters collect data
3. What ethical issues do you see emerging
- Data collection and analization of that data. One of the things mentioned was know who you are writing for. You have to stick to the truth because if not you could get into a lot of trouble. You must record everything you see and hear. Every quote, detail detail. Always refer back to your notes in case of a discrepancy or an inaccurate accusations come up, you have proof or back up. Little details make a big difference. An editor and writers relationship can make all the difference between a good piece of writing.

Research Expierience
Dr. Seloni had told us in the beginning of our research topic since day one, pick a topic that you know you will be interested. As soon as she said this I took it seriously. Because if I were to pick a topic of no interest I'd get lazy and unmotivated in writing it. So for my topic I decide to chose teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy interested me because lots of girls in the United States are becoming pregnant more often and at a earlier and more earlier age. There are many different methods one can take to not get pregnant. I wanted to know why? Why has this all of a sudden increased again. I have found that it had a lot do with educating these young people. I also wanted to know what types of affects this kind of pregnancy has on the mother as well as the child themselves. When looking for articles I decided to find articles that pertained to my topic. Lots of the articles I chose, I chose because it would either have something I agreed with or disagreed with, so that I could come up with a valid argument. During writing my methodology I decided to write about how I'd go about constructing my own research. I wanted to interview two mother's who were pregnant during teenage years. I also wanted to interview two people and their opinions on teenage parents.
Execise for Paraphrasing
Often times when writing a research paper, students will use many direct quotations as oppose to paraphrasing. When the paper is looked at as a whole, only a small percentage should be direct quotations. The paper should be made up of more of the student's voice as oppose to the person's voice in where they got the information from. (Lester 46-47)

The Tipping Point In Review
The Tipping Point talks a lot about social issues and how and what can be done to make things tip to start an epidemic. In terms of an epidemic, I see it as anything that can be wide spread. So when talking about socila justices in terms of epidemics I believe that it would be nice to be able to start an epidemic to put a stop to the increase of teenage preganacy in the United States. It seems almost as if the teenage pregnancy rates rising is an epidemic of itself. There are televison shows, movies, books, magazines that discuss this issue, but doesn't adress how to go about solving the issue. The way in which I can tip this social epidemic to put it in reverse is educate. Informing people about it, what can be done so that it can be prevented, and so forthe.
The most influential chapter in the book for me by far was the Power of Context chapter, part one. This will be a chapter of a book that I will never forget. I feel as though ten to twenty years from now if I reflect back on all the books I have read throughout my college career and someone were to ask me to name a chapter it would be the Power of Context part one in Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point. I will not forget the mans name, Bernie Goetz, in who we were introduced to in this chapter, that gunned down four black teenage boys. All for the simple fact that he felt threatened. Althoug I think he felt far more than threatened, more like fed up with the black teenage males that help make up the inner city youth, wanted to do something about it, take matters into his own hands. I won't forget how people saw this man as a hero, how he got away with murder literally, our class discussion on it, and the youtube interview we watched as well as the comments left underneath. It was my favorite chapter because its by far most memorable, it fit in with what I wanted to know about epidemics, the enviornment in which we live in can affect us, and vise versa.
One idea that I can take with me is informing others. Informing others about impotant information that we have to share. Do not keep it to yourself because you never know in which ways it can help.

Power of Context
Discussion Questions
1. The story of Bernie Goetz is one of a "regular" "ordinary looking" man in his mid-thirties entering a subway in New York City. When he got onto the subway he decided to seat himself in the back car with four young black teens horsing around and carrying on. When one of the kids asked him for five dollars he told them to leave him alone, as the kid asked again another one smiled and he shot all four of them right there on the spot. One of the kids was stretching out in pain and he shot him again just for moving. Some people see this man as a cold-blooded murderer while others see him as a hero. I see him as a murderer. The thought that someone could get off with three counts of murder alongside paralyzing a teenager for the rest of his life is a murderer. People see him as a hero because it turns out that the four youths had had a criminal background, and they view him as brining justice to these three youths. This is not the way I see it at all. Although these kids looked and were acting “suspicious” they never did anything deliberately to cause for Goetz to act in self defense, let alone shooting and killing them. On top of that no human being has the right to decide when any other human being should and will die. His job is not to bring justice to those who commit crimes on the street, that is the job of a police officer, not a ordinary man off the street. The fact that Goetz already had something against black people, which we know from his quote on page 148 of the Tipping Point “The only way we are going to clean up the streets is to get rid of the spics and the niggers”, causes me to question his incentives. The only reason why I think he had something against black people is because of the language that was used. Completely unnecessary language is used. He could have said criminals, mischievous characters, juveniles, delinquents, felons, and so on and so forth. But this makes me question his incentives, if you already feel some type of way about a particular group of people why would you associate yourself with them as oppose to separating yourself from them? And it doesn’t even have to be a race issue either, if the teens in the back of the subway car already looked rowdy, or suspicious, or dangerous, or threatening to you...why did you deliberately go back there and sit with them? Doesn’t add up right does it? I personally believe he wanted to go back there so they could "set him off" in other words say something to him to get him upset and he’d have a chance or a reason to do what he did, ceasing the opportunity to take action and matters into his own hands. Goetz took matters to far.

Ch 3 Stickiness Factor
Queastion 1.
One of the examples that my group came up with was the effect that video games have on kids. Video games can have a negative connotation on children, such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. Kids can get the false impression that they can react without consequences in certain situations such a war, theft, and violence.
Question 4.
We came up with the conclusion that television shows such as Sesame Street and Blue's Clues do appear more "sticky" and educational than children because books arent always going to appeal to children at such a young age. They may not even be old enough to read, yet they can understand what is going on in the show

Tipping Point Ch 2
I liked chapter 2 of the Tipping Point it was very interesting to see Gladwelll elborate on the Law of the Few by giving us specific examples we can relate to. The most interesting argument he prestented in the chapter was when he was talking about his friend Horchow. Most of us have acquaintances to try to see if we want to keep them as friends or not. We just pass them on a day to day basis, say a quick hello, or only have a few encounters with them out of the entire year. Where as Horchow sends birthday cards, friendly emails, and referances to restaruants he thinks are good to people. He collected data that everyone could relate to. It made me think how many of my facebook friends do I really talk to and why? Should I delete the ones I do no0t talk to, should I keep them there and get to know them since I already know all of the others I talk to day to day or on a daily basis. I also liked how he further explained the difference between the connector and the maven. Mavens have information to share, a purpose where as connectors just know alot of people. I have found that I have a connector and a maven from two of my close friends in college. Before I probably would have thought they were both just connectors but reading this chapter helped me distinguish between the two. This was a good chapter!!!
Twilight vs. The Tipping Point
When I first think if the kinds of reading that I usually do such as the Twilight Series, not very many simularities come to mind when I think of the Tipping Point.
A comparison that I can think of is Bella(main character in Twilight) shares many of her thoughts with the reader. Gladwell shares a lot of his thoughts with us as well. Another thing that I think of when comapring and contrasting the Twilight series vs. the Tipping Point is Gladwell and Bella have many accounts with several other people. They let us know what those other people are thinking, and what they think those other people may be thinking as well. Twilight makes several referances to other famous romance novels such as Romeo and Juliet as well as Withering Heights and Pride and Prejudice. Gladewell makes severeal referances as well. As for contrasts or differences there are many I can think of. Twilight is a narrative, where as in the tipping point Gladwell doesn't have dialouge with other people he mentions or comes across in the book. Twilight is a fictional novel where as the Tipping Point is not. Twilight has romance in it,and even though we did not get too far in our reading, I doubt there is going to be a sotry about star-crossed lovers in The Tipping Point.

Tipping Point Ch. 1 Summary
In The Tipping Point, by Malcolm Gladwell, he raises the issue of social awarness with explaining epidemics and how they get started in three different rules.
The first chapter discusses that epidemics need to be started by three different rules: The Law of the Few, Stickiness Factor, and Power of Context. He uses the syphilis problem that occured in Baltimore Maryland in the mid 1990's to help us better understand epidemics and how it can be started. Basically there is more than one way to tip an epidemic.
Epidemics are a function of people who promotes the infectious agent, the infectios agent itself, as well as the enviorment in which the agent is operating in.
That is exactly how the syphilis outbreak started in Baltimore Maryland. It was started in three different ways: The drug problem increased risky sexual behavior failing for people to be unsafe and not educated or smart about their chocies in behavior. The second was the cut back in medical assistance in the city, and the third was the housing projects being torn down. Each one of these examples caused for this disease to spread outragiously. This happened with only a small population of people, which explains the 20/80 rule.
He wraps up the end of the chapter by stating the three laws of the epidemic, and giving you s preview of what is up ahead. He also asks questions at the end of the chapter to get the readers mind prepared for what they can think about after they close the book, and letting the reader know that the three rules will be later explored in more detail.

Ch. 1 Tipping Point (Jackie & Kat)
Name the three rules of an epidemic in the tipping point, also along with naming those three rules give us one example of at least one of the rules using the Drug problem in Baltimore, MD.
Explain breifly the 20/80 rule..what it is, and or how it works.

Teenage Pregnancy (Brainstorming)
The topic in which I am interested in researching and writing about is teenage pregnancy. I want to know why it has increased overtime, exactly how much it has increased, and if the impact of education has anything to do with that. Is the age getting younger becuase maybe more and more young girls are engaging in sexual intercourse before they are educated about it. Educated about birth control, condoms, about sex period, myths and facts about pregnancy. Why is the rate getting higher? IS this some sort of trend? When I entered high school a girl had gotten pregnant in her freshman year. Two more girls got pregnant during my sophomore year, and many more got pregnant during junior and senior year. It was ridiculous, when two of my friends had told me they got pregnant (one my senior year of high school and the other during my freshman year of college) I was shocked. Many of these girls do not want to deal with the consequences that come along with it. And then think about all the girls who did get pregnant, but we don't know about. The ones who got abortions, or had miscarriages. Some girls even hide their pregnancies so well that their parents don't even know about it until it is time for them to give birth at the hospital, and unfortunately I have heard of cases where others hide it, give birth, and dispose of the child after like it is trash and goes on to live their life as if nothing ever happened. Pregnancy can have many affects on a young girls life. Psychological,emotional,physical..
I want to explore this topic because one day I am going to be a teache, an elementary school teacher. And as an educator I need to know if there is anything I can do as an educator to help these young women before they make decisions they regret. Such as proposing the idea of abstinence, and even of these young women/girls do not want to abstain, educate them about birth control and condoms too, at least anything to make the rate go down so that they do not have to go through these life changing expieriences when/if they are not ready and something can be done about it to prevent it.

Diveristy and Social Change
The place in which I grew up was very diverse,so it is important for me to have that aspect in any part of my life. I have known nothing different, and I don't want to. When chosing a college, one of the main questions I asked myself while chosing was : "Is this campus diverse enough for me? As I look around are there several different people I can get to know and learn from?" My mother wanted me to go to what one would call a traditional white college, where the majority of the students were caucasion. My father on the other hand wanted me to go to a HBCU (Historically Black College or University).
I think it is important for people to take awareness in how diverse our world is becoming around us, not only take awareness but be engage in it as well.If you see someone different from you in a way, or more than one way, you should get to know that person. Get to know why that person is the way they are, maybe you will learn that you have a little bit of that person inside of you, or you have a little bit of you inside of them. Get to know what you have in common. This is the only way people will learn and grow is if they step outside of their compfort zone and are introduced to something totally outside of their element. It is important for us to be open minded and not narrow minded because things are rapidlu changing, they are not going to stay the same forever. When I say take awareness to our world, I don't only mean the United States. When I say our world I mean from anything as broad as the earth itself, our planet, the world literally to as confined as campus, the cafeteria, your own dorm room. The word diversity can be used in many different contexts too when discussing what one may think the word means such as race, ethnicity, religion, political views, sexual orientation, gender, and socio-economic status. There are many many more, but those are just a few to name that most people think of when the word diversity comes to mind.
Like stated before it is very important to try to introduce yourself to new things, new people, new culture, new foods. It is the only way you can help your growth as a person, and as a student as well. When we get into our job feilds after graduating, the carrer world is going to be even bigger. It started off in high school, now we are in college, and next is the world. It is important to take advantage now, soak up everything you can, have an opened mind, because if not you are going to be overwhelmed. Like I said earlier the world is not going to stay the same, it is only going to keep changing and progressing so so what you can now to adjust yourself for that.
As far as research topic ideas there are quite a few I am considering. Some have to do with my major, others do not. I would like to research something such as why has teen preganancy rate increased over the years and the age of children having sex these days is getting younger and younger. I recently saw a lifetime movie called the Pregnancy Pact where about sixteen young girls all decided to make a pact to get pregnant at the same time. I don't think these girls knew how drastic their lives would change as well as the boys who they chose to impregnate themselves too. It blew my mind away. Also shows on tv like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom have made me wonder if this is happening because girls these days think it is some sort of "trend" or not. Another topic I may be interested in researching is Diversity in the Classroom.

My Linguistic History
Ever since I could remember I loved to write. I first discovered my love for writing in elementary school in the 3rd grade. We all got our own personal journals in which we would have formal written assignments to do in class every day of the week, but every friday we got to free write. That was my favorite, free writing Friday. I loved free writing Friday because we had no limits, no restraints. Our only rule was to write. We could be as creative, wacky, and crazy as we wanted to. The best part about it was there was no certain amount we had to write. You could write as much as one word on the page or write two pages back to back. The time where writing went from being fun to becoming a hassle to me was in Middle School. Why you might ask? This is when I could remember when I first had to write for a standardized test..fun fun fun (sacasm). We spent weeks upon weeks preparing for a prompt that no one would know but the practice we were doing would be simular to whatever prompt we had to prepare for. I remember a lot of kids being frustrated and upset during that portion of the test, however I did not fell frustrated or upset. Weird right? I know! I think it had much to do with the way my teachers taught and prepared me and my other fellow Mary D. Lang Elemntary alumni for Middle School. The kids from Greenwood Elementary and New Garden Elementary seemed frustrated and disorganized. At Mary D I can remember writing in a journal either the same or simular to the one i got in third grade from third grade through sixth. Out teacher's knew that by the time we got to middle school the idea of the standardized test would make us panick and feel unrelaxed or nervous or unprepared about writing. So without giving it some big scary name like standarized, they just gave us prompts simular to the ones they knew would be asked and told us to write about them. By the time we got to Middle School and we got intorduced to these prompts, everyone from my elementary school thought this is what we had been doing in the past three years, it is just now that we get to middle school they call them prompts for standardized tests. I feel like the basis of writing starts in the elementary classroom, I now realize that ever since the third grade I have been prepared to write, whether it be responding to a prompt, bloging, writng a research paper, a review for a book or movie, or simply just writing a poem or free writing in my journal. The preparation that I got in elementary school lead me to be comfortable with my writing in middle school, which placed me in good classes in High School that prepared me for where I am today in this very moment writing this blog right now. I feel that my discovery and love for writing in elemenary school has something to do with me wanting to be a teacher now., Teachers help students find their niche, and I want to help someone else find their's.
About Me =)
Hello Everyone,
My name is a Jackilyn Lewis. I grew up in a small town outside of Philadelphia and I feel a little akward because I just added the class, have an idea of what to expect..but not really Lol! This will be my first time ever writing/creating a blog so we'll see how this whole thing goes. Fortunately for me I love love loooooove writing, so I have a feeling I might enjoy the writing part of this class..I don't know about the research part though. I love spending time with family and friends. I really don't care what we're doing as long as they're around then I'm all good. I love to dance..I am a dancer, yes I am. I'm part of a team on campus called Ritmo Latino, its a very diverse dance group made up of both males and females and although the title sounds like it is latin based dance, we do various different styles. Hip-Hop, Interprative, Step, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue and so much more those are just my favorites. Speaking of hip-hop I have a love for it and RnB music..not the crazy stuff you hear on the radio these days but the good stuff like 90's and 80's hip hop and RnB, even though I like some artists that are out today. Basketball is my favorite sport (Go Celtics!) even though I can't play AT ALL haha I shoot pretty well but I'm not a contact person. I played softball and love it..baseball is my second favorite sport (Go Phillies). If you looked at me you probably wouldn't guess I was the kind of person to get worked up over sports..but those sports OH YES! My two sisters, my mom, and my nephew are my world. My major is Elementary Education and I recently took up Spanish as my minor..I love the language! If anyone has questions or needs help with spanish let me know =) (I am only on the introductory level though. I love working with kids and believe they do have a significant impact on the future they are our future!! After I teach for five years I'm considering going back to school to get my cosmotology liscense or maybe a degree in journalism..who knows we'll see! =)
